The sleeping giant that was the Okotoks Dawgs' (5-4) offense coming into this game was awoken in a 21-5 drubbing over the visiting Medicine Hat Mavericks (5-2), which included a 14-run inning. The Dawgs, who were down two games to none coming into tonight's game, kept their season alive for another day with the victory in the best-of-five Western Finals.
Zach Johnson (Porterville College), the hottest hitter in the WMBL Playoffs, tore up the Mavericks pitching staff with a 4-6 game including a massive two-run home run in the fifth. He also finished a triple shy of the cycle with four RBIs. Ellis Kelly (Lamar Community College) hit his first home run (solo) of his Dawgs campaign, going 2-6. Mario Sanchez (Colorado State University - Pueblo) had two RBIs on four hits.
Chris Sievers (Northeastern Junior College) started for the Dawgs and allowed two runs through three innings while striking out three. Shawn Andersen's (Douglas College) strong playoffs continued as held the Mavericks scoreless through four innings.
Jon Rand, who was previously unbeaten against the Dawgs, was roughed up and allowed three runs before exiting the game early. The other Mavericks relievers did not fare well, and first baseman Andy Scott had to pitch the eighth and ninth innings
The Dawgs four total home runs (Crane, Fish, Kelly and Johnson) were their most of the year in a single game, to go with their 22 hits. The team also turned an outstanding triple play to get out of trouble in one inning.
Tomorrow, the Dawgs and Mavericks link up again at 7:05 PM at Seaman Stadium in game four, another do-or-die for the home squad. Calgary Stampeders' quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell will throw out the first pitch of the game. Tickets can be purchased at 403-262-3294 or by visiting the Dawgs stadium ticket office starting at 9 AM tomorrow.
At 12:30 PM tomorrow, the Roberto Alomar and Friends Charity Home Run Derby will be held at Seaman Stadium, with many former Blue Jays in running it. Entrance is by donation.
